The Goal of the GRYP Community Involvement Committee is to organize and promote community-based activities which provide opportunities for the GRYP Membership to become actively involved in our Community.

Through the Community Involvement Committee, GRYP Members have been able to participate in events such as the Annual Grand River Clean-Up in the fall, organizing a Toys for Tots Drive around the Holidays, holding a Professional Clothing Drive to benefit Goodwill’s Workforce Development Program, serving residents of the Heartside Neighborhood at Mel Trotter’s Picnic in the Park, packing Thanksgiving meals for the Senior Meals on Wheels program and raising money for the American Cancer Society and YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign through various events. The Grand Rapids Area Chamber and the steering committee for the upcoming West Michigan Policy Forum would like to invite members of GRYP, who are under 35 years of age to engage with the business leaders and policy makers who will be attending the West Michigan Policy Forum on September 16-17.  Members of your group are welcome to attend the Policy Forum at a special Young Professionals' rate of just $250. (Considering some people must register at $750, this is quite a deal!) You can find out more about the Forum at www.grandrapids.org/policyforum.   Volunteers work with the

Schools of Hope Program with United Way

Heart of West Michigan United Way’s Schools of Hope program, partners with the Grand Rapids Public Schools to recruit and train reading tutors to work with elementary students in grades 1 – 3 in 15 schools. Schools provide all the materials for tutors, direct supervision by a Schools of Hope coordinator, and most provide a separate room designated specifically for Schools of Hope. Schools of Hope is part of the United Way Literacy strategy to close the reading achievement gap between GRPS third grade students and the highest scoring districts in Kent County.

The goal of Schools of Hope is that third graders in the Grand Rapids Public Schools will be performing at the same reading level as their counterparts in the Kent Intermediate School District as measured by the MEAP tests.
