Volunteers work with the Schools of Hope Program with United Way
Heart of West Michigan United Way’s Schools of Hope program, partners with the Grand Rapids Public Schools to recruit and train reading tutors to work with elementary students in grades 1 – 3 in 15 schools. Schools provide all the materials for tutors, direct supervision by a Schools of Hope coordinator, and most provide a separate room designated specifically for Schools of Hope. Schools of Hope is part of the United Way Literacy strategy to close the reading achievement gap between GRPS third grade students and the highest scoring districts in Kent County.
